THINKING OF PURCHASING A PUPPY???? PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU DO
“Beware of Laughlin Kennel in Oxford, MA”
In the last couple of months my husband and I started searching for a new puppy. We found (after looking many places) the beautiful little girl we were searching for. She was a 9 week old yellow lab, with the most beautiful face we knew she was meant to be with us.
We went to see her Friday 11/9/07 @ 5:00pm (it had to be after 4:00 so she was Vet. checked first), and we instantly fell in love. She had a “clean” & “signed” bill of health by Laughlin’s Kennel Vet., so we proceeded with the paperwork and set up a time to pick her up on Saturday.
We picked her up @ noon on Saturday 11/10/07 and she seemed fine, very loving and playful. Later that evening she began to cough a little but slept well that night. Later on in the day on Sunday she began coughing, wheezing and gagging, so we called Laughlin Kennel, but got no answer. We stayed up with her all night to keep an eye on her and called our own veterinarian (which we have used in the past for our other pets) first thing Monday 11/12/07. They got us in right away and the Dr. found that she “had” kennel cough which turned into pneumonia. The Dr. also did a fecal check which showed low readings of Giardia, and stated that the puppy had been treated at Laughlin Kennel for this parasite on Friday 11/9/07, but chronic exposure at a kennel can cause re-infection. We find it very hard to believe that a licensed veterinarian did not find anything wrong with this puppy after a thorough physical examination at Laughlin Kennel.
We gave Laughlin Kennel a courtesy call to let them know about our puppy so they would be alerted of this very contagious, rapidly spread infection that might be spread throughout their kennel and we wanted to know if they would at least cover the cost of the medicine needed to treat her illness that she got in their care. Their sad and disgusting answer to this was……”We do not cover vet bills. You can bring her back for a refund or you can pick out another puppy”!!! Are you kidding me???? We love and bonded with this sick and needy puppy, and could not believe their response!!! Gheez, do you give up a baby because something is wrong with her? Of course not, you love her and get her the proper medical care she needs to get healthy. Well, the girl we spoke to on the phone told us it was out of her hands and that she would have the manager call us back. It has now been two weeks and still, no call. Not even a courtesy call to see how she was or to apologize about the situation.
We believe that if we hadn’t gotten her when we did, that she may not have made it. Let’s face it; she definitely wasn’t going to get any medical treatment from Laughlin, which leads us to believe that she could have died there. And what about all the other animals there…..what are their chances of surviving if they are sick and no one purchases them? Slim to none.
We brought our puppy to our Dr. for her 1 week follow up 11-19-07, to make sure she was progressing from the meds she’s been prescribed and to have another fecal check done. The Dr. also found whip-worm and coccidia, which she is now being treated for.
We have heard nothing but negativity about Laughlin Kennel after speaking with several people and pet supply stores. No one had a good thing to say about them and would not recommend them to anyone.
Our intention of this letter is to let the community know about this so called Kennel (a/k/a puppy mill), and that more people that have been through similar experiences at this Kennel will come forward. We are starting a petition to send off to the proper organizations. If you have had any experience with this kennel and would like to come forward, please email me at

The only good thing that happened out of this whole ordeal is that we found our new family member and she is on the road to recovery.
