Greyhounds Get Their Signatures Print
It’s a huge step: The greyhounds, and those who fight for them, are that much closer to victory. Volunteers are ecstatic that they submitted 45,000 signatures (four times the required amount) to hopefully get a question on this November’s ballot that could phase out greyhound racing by 2010.

Led by the Committee to Protect Dogs, this initiative is called the Dog Protection Act and would rid the state of racing at Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park and Wonderland Greyhound Park. Presently, town clerks are validating the entries to present to the Secretary of State by July 2 at 5 p.m.

It won’t be smooth sailing, though. George Carney, owner of the Rayhnam-Taunton track, filed a lawsuit in March, stating that the referendum shouldn’t be considered for the ballot because it targets two particular businesses.

“The Committee is overwhelmed by the public response to the Greyhound Protection Act,” says Christine Dorchak of GREY2K, “and is confident that Massachusetts citizens will vote to end dog racing in November. Although the Carney family has brought suit against the state to block voters from having this opportunity, it is our belief that the court will see through Raynham Park's latest attempt to conceal the cruelty of greyhound racing.”

And even if the question does make the ballot, advocates will have to fight hard to get the initiative to pass. As most remember in the 2000 election, the vote lost by a margin of 2 percent at the 11th hour.

The greyhounds will need your help to fight the business powerhouses, who can often afford to pump out more primetime ads and marketing.
